I had today an interesting lesson of contemporary art, about 2 amazing artists: Louise Bourgeois (Fran - US) and Edward Hopper (US). what I like very much in Louise is the way she organizes her ideas to make it seems so logical, plus the idea of where does all her inspiration come from.
Louise seems to me someone who learned a lot with her awkward experiences in life and she expresses all these lessons in her work, which in terms of intensity are very interesting, but I shall confess that I am more to her words and ideas than to her work.
A quote from Louise Bourgeois:
" The spiral is an attempt at controlling the chaos. It has two directions. Where do you place yourself, at the periphery or at the vortex? Beginning at the outside is the fear of losing control; the winding in is a tightening, a retreating, a compacting to the pint of disappearance. Beginning at the center is affirmation, the move outward is a representation of giving, and giving up control; of trust, positive energy, or life itself."
Although Louise really interests me, I think today`s lesson was really Edward Hopper. He has, just like Louise Bourgeois, this melancholic and nostalgic atmosphere inside his paintings, photos and drawings, but I think the difference is the way they see the world with a slightly difference of perspective. It`s is just amazing.
A quote from Edward Hopper:
"No amount of skillful invention can replace the essential element of imagination"
"Excursion into philosophy" was one of the paintings I saw today in class, and it created a nice discussion about the story that this painting could have. In that time I was anxious to hear the name of the painting, because it had a really big impact on me. And even before getting to know the name of the painting, I already had the idea of a philosopher in my mind. Images of Schopenhauer and Nietzsche which my mind related to this character. A woman half naked, sexual relations while he is awake and thinking with a a melancholic expression in his face. It reminded me of an article that I once read about Schopenhauer`s ideas about love and sexual relationships.
A quote from Schopenhauer:
"[The intellect] does not penetrate into the secret workshop of the will's decisions. It is, of course, a confidant of the will, yet a confidant that does not get to know everything."
At the same time these images appeared in my mind, I found a word which perhaps explain this one`s face: Dissatisfaction.
